virtual world collaboration

As I have been developing an exciting project in Second Life recently, collaborating in-world (as they say) with people across the US, in the UK, Switzerland and elsewhere – but more on that later – the emerging virtual world collaboration concepts have been rattling around my brain, emails and blogs that I read.

Whilst I bemoaned the fact that Eco-Build event had no real virtual presence, it was good to note Phils push for the virtual Sustainability Now event (now moved to 1 and 2 July).

I haven’t given enough time to the Think on line  forum – it didn’t really take off for me, but I sense that may be addressed through the Think08 event (where hopefully there will be more, and parallel online content)

In what must be a classic oxymoron – the Virtual Worlds conference in New York in April would appear not to be availble online!

An email from Howard Lictman at TelepresenceOptions intrigued me with the expression ‘keeping people off planes and improving collaboration” I guess here in the UK that would translate to ‘keeping people off the roads and improving collaboration” which is always a good thing.  (Telepresence is a conferencing technology where participants feel as if they are in the same physical space.)

Howards fascinating paper: ‘Telepresence, Effective Visual Collaboration and the Future of Global Business at the Speed of Light’ can be downloaded here

Facebook is too bloated now for effective collaboration – other than shallow social fun.

Finally there is a debate within  LinkedIn  discussing where the best Live Community collaborations are to be found – Second Life, Facebook, or elsewhere.  Maybe the answer to that is within the blogging community?

Eco Build 2008 – not online … ?

I have recently registered to visit Eco Build in London at the end of the month. Billed as Europe’s biggest event dedicated to sustainable design, construction and the built environment.

It is disappointing to note that there appears to be no webcast or webinars or any web broadcasting of the presentations or events.  20,000 people are expected – all making fossil fuel based journeys to attend.  Lets have some web based sharing to spread the messages from Eco Build wider and reduce travel miles.  Events such as this should be sustainable themselves.

A call to the Eco Build organisers to comment …

coming soon … site waste management plans

With under three months to go before SWMP become mandatory on projects over £250,000, I was amazed to read the results of a survey, conducted last year by NetRegs suggesting that the construction industry is sleep walking into the legislation with two thirds of respondents (66%) saying they didn’t know what an SWMP is and 63% were not aware that SWMPs could soon become a legal requirement.

SWMP are also a requirement of the Code for Sustainable Housing as a minimum requirement from Level One upwards.

At, fairsnape we have developed a basic and easy SWMP format that uses the project programme as the basis for addressing waste management thats goes a good way to meeting the legislation requirements … more

For more information Envirowise is running a series of events across the country and has much good advise on their website.

I note from the Envirowise documents that the typical cost of a skip is £1300 (when labour and materials are costed) and some 13% of materials deleivered to sites leave via the skips.  Ouch

Free low carbon building event

The North West Sustainability in Built Environment Education forum is holding a presentation and workshop on Low Carbon Buildings at UCLAN (University of Central Lancs – Preston) on Feb 1st.    Download details from the Events page.

The Sustainability in Built Environment Education forum is a mixture of industry and academics looking at improving the provision of sustainability in all levels of he built environment curriculum.

The forum is open to all interested in this important aspect with much activity taking place within a social network online and with four ‘events’ each year. Although there is a North West (England) focus the work and issues are much much wider. If you would like more information, attend this event or participate in the forum online please contact me or the forum secretary.

getting to zero

One of the excellent articles on the new Building Sustainability site is The Year to Zero.  putting many of the important targets and objectives being set for our industry in a chronoligical count down to carbon zero, neutral or ‘sustainability’. (or wherever its is deemed we need to be)
The article, in conjunction with Fulcron Consultaing will be updated as and when more targets are set, so definelty one to watch.

I use a similar approach, looking into the ‘planned future’ for our sector, helping organisations set their own strategies and targets, on green and other related topics.  How do your business or improvement plans map onto this timeline?  Will you be ahead of the game, prepared, or lagging and playing catchup? Do you even have a route-map to get you there?
